EU Proposes Extended 90-Day Rule for Certain Non-EU Workers

The EU is considering allowing some non-EU workers to stay longer than the standard 90-day visa-free period under specific conditions.

The European Union has announced plans to extend the 90-day rule for certain categories of non-EU workers, potentially allowing longer stays without a formal residence permit. The proposal targets remote workers, digital nomads, and other mobile professionals who currently must leave the Schengen area after 90 days in any 180-day period or obtain a long-stay visa.

Details remain limited, but the extension would likely apply to workers with proof of income, health insurance, and clean background checks. This addresses a real pain point for digital nomads and remote workers who have been forced to either leave the Schengen zone, apply for expensive national visas, or engage in the risky practice of visa runs.

The EU is considering allowing certain non-EU workers to exceed the standard 90-day limit.

If you're working remotely in Europe, don't rely on this proposal yet—it has not been finalized into law. Continue following the 90/180 rule strictly, and if you plan to stay longer, apply for a digital nomad visa or long-stay residence permit in your chosen country now. Once the EU rule is formally adopted, you'll have more flexibility, but timing is uncertain.
