Germany's Opportunity Card targets skilled workers

Germany is rolling out a new visa designed to let skilled workers find a job over one year—here's who qualifies and how it works.

Germany has launched the Opportunity Card, a work visa aimed at attracting skilled foreign workers who don't yet have a job lined up. The card lets you enter Germany and spend up to a year searching for employment in your field, then transition to a standard work permit once you land a position.

This matters if you're a professional outside the EU looking to work in Germany. The visa removes the catch-22 of needing a job offer before you can move—you can now arrive, network, interview, and settle into a role at your own pace. It's particularly useful for people in tech, engineering, healthcare, and trades where Germany has labor shortages.

You can now arrive, network, interview, and settle into a role at your own pace.

The mechanics are straightforward: you apply for the Opportunity Card, show proof of qualifications (degree, certifications, or relevant work experience), and demonstrate you can support yourself financially while job-hunting. Once you secure employment, your employer helps you convert to a standard work visa. The card is valid for one year and is renewable if you haven't found work yet, though the rules on renewal aren't fully detailed in the announcement.
